The Learning Objectives and Subjects of this program

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPTI) program prepares graduates for entry-level positions as phlebotomists in hospitals, clinics, independent laboratory service centers, physician's offices, healthcare centers, insurance companies, research facilities, prisons, and public health clinics. Phlebotomists work all shifts, all days of the week. CPTI’s are primarily responsible for the collection of blood specimens using standard phlebotomy techniques. Other duties include record checks, record keeping, verification of patient identification, instructing patients on the collection of other specimens (urine, stool, and sputum, etc), and specimen processing. The phlebotomist must have the skills to perform routine, non-routine, and the most difficult blood draws. They must be able to determine the appropriate specimen collection supplies and equipment for specific laboratory tests and alter collection techniques, as required, for different laboratory tests. They must understand how the laboratory works and the important role of collection technique in laboratory testing results.  The phlebotomist is the primary conduit between the patient and the laboratory and in many cases; they are the only laboratory representatives that the patient will see. With this in mind, the phlebotomists is required to have extensive knowledge in the patience’s Bill of Rights, HIPPA compliance, patient based service care, and communication skills.
